Fruitfulness in Finances: Beyond the Appearance

Hello, everyone!

I want to share with you a story from the Bible that, at first glance, might seem unrelated to our financial lives. It’s the story of Jesus cursing the fig tree. You may wonder, “What does a withered fig tree have to do with my finances?” Well, there are profound lessons from this passage that apply to how we manage our resources and how we can be financially fruitful in our lives.

In Matthew 21 and Mark 11, we read about how Jesus saw a fig tree full of leaves. From a distance, it appeared healthy and thriving, but when Jesus got closer, He found no fruit. The tree, though it looked impressive, was barren. Jesus cursed it, and it withered. His disciples were amazed, and Jesus used the moment to teach about the power of faith.

Now, why would Jesus curse a fig tree for not having fruit? And what can we learn from it, especially when it comes to our finances?

The fig tree looked good on the outside, but it had no fruit. Financially, this is a reminder that we should not focus solely on outward appearances —the things that make us look wealthy or successful. In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in having the latest gadgets, cars, or expensive clothes. But these are just “leaves.” What matters is the fruit —our actual financial health.

Are we saving wisely? Are we investing in things that bear fruit in the long term? Are we living within our means and avoiding debt? Proverbs 13:11 says, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” It’s not about looking rich; it’s about being financially responsible and fruitful.

Jesus expected the fig tree to bear fruit, just as God expects us to use the resources He has entrusted to us wisely. We are accountable for how we manage what we have. In the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), we see that God blesses those who use their resources productively. The servant who buried his talent out of fear was rebuked, while those who invested and multiplied theirs were rewarded.

What are we doing with the finances God has given us? Are we being good stewards? Luke 16:10 reminds us, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” Whether we have a little or a lot, God calls us to be faithful with what we have.

The fig tree failed to produce fruit, even though it had the potential. Financially, this speaks to the importance of preparing for the future. Life is full of seasons—some are abundant, and others are lean. Proverbs 6:6-8 says, “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”

Are we preparing for the unexpected? Do we have an emergency fund? Are we thinking about the future—retirement, family needs, or other obligations? Like the ant, we must plan and save for the tough seasons.

Jesus used the fig tree to teach about faith. He told His disciples that with faith, they could move mountains. This applies to our finances as well. Financial growth requires faith and patience. Sometimes, we want quick results, but the process of building wealth and financial stability takes time. Just like a tree takes time to bear fruit, we must trust the process and be patient with the steps we take—whether it’s saving little by little, avoiding unnecessary debt, or investing wisely.

Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” If we remain faithful in how we manage our resources, God will bless our efforts.

The story of Jesus cursing the fig tree teaches us that fruitfulness matters more than appearances. Whether in our spiritual lives or our finances, God is looking for real results, not just an impressive show. Let us take a moment to reflect on how we are managing the resources God has given us. Are we fruitful? Are we prepared? Are we accountable?

As we seek to be faithful stewards, let’s remember that true financial fruitfulness comes from responsible management, planning for the future, and trusting God with our efforts. Just as Jesus taught His disciples about faith, let us have faith in God’s provision and be wise with what He has entrusted to us.
